What great reason we have to be cheerful

There is an old expression that “you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar,” and I suspect most of us can confirm this from our own personal experience. Nobody wants advice from a sourpuss; many will even decline a helping hand offered from beneath a furrowed brow. As Ella Wheeler Wilcox put it in her poem Solitude:

Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go;

They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe.

It turns out that cheerfulness is not simply a nice thing to offer but is a necessary component of our Vincentian virtue of gentleness.

A virtue is “habitual and firm disposition to do good.” [Catechism:1833] Habits, good and bad, can be changed, and our disposition towards cheerfulness can be natural, or it can be acquired.

As in all things, we seek to follow Christ’s example, confident that our true hope lies in doing His will. And if we truly seek to “serve in hope,” our very countenances should shine with confidence, hope, and good cheer – especially so every time we are blessed to serve Christ in the person of His poor.

“Be quite cheerful, I beg you. Oh, what great reason people of good will have to be cheerful!” [CCD I:84]

Perhaps we can consider this month: what is keeping me from smiling, and how can I surrender it to God?

April Reflection

Spring has sprung here at St. Vincent de Paul, Bremerton! Just as the fresh blooms of this season bless the hillsides, a special transformation is blossoming within our organization. As a key component of our three-year strategic plan, we are embarking on a comprehensive project that will revitalize over two acres of property that we own in between N. Callow and N. Wycoff in the Charleston Dist. of Bremerton.

Our strategic vision was initiated last year with the move of our beloved store to Wheaton Way Mall. This was intentional to provide temporary operating space for our Assistance Office and Food Bank while revitalization commences on the north end of our property. We are relocating our Assistance Office & Food Bank to 1117 N Callow (our old Thrift Store Building down the street) to provide a nutrition-based, farmer's market style shopping experience for the families we serve. We will continue to offer the same financial assistance services, 24-Hour Packs, and an improved grocery selection. We can't wait to welcome you to our new space this summer!

We invite you to come to the Town Hall meeting on April 8th (4-6pm) at 100 Oyster Bay Ave N (Bremerton Public Works) to learn more details about the impending development of our property and expansion of our services!

As with the cheerfulness of springtime flowers warming their faces in the sun, we encourage you to help us pollinate good cheer through service in Christ’s example to the underserved in our community.

Our new Assistance Office location will require additional volunteers to operate! Are you interested in joining our volunteer team? Please give us a call at 360-377-2929 ext. 7

We continue to invite you to join us in service in 2024, as we have several areas across our organization where you can plug in and make a difference. Especially at our Thrift Store. Many of you may not know the ministry of clothing those in need at our store. We provided over 1,500 clothing vouchers in 2023! This equates to over 7,200 articles of clothing provided to those currently experiencing homelessness in our community! If you are looking to serve and make a big impact, consider volunteering at our Superstore!
